Costuming:
Milieux: The Über costuming site. This has links to a little bit of everything. Quite often my first stop for ethnic or historical costume reference.
The Dewback Wing: A site that started out as a Star Wars costuming group. If you look at the "props" message board you can see that it now includes costuming on a wide array of popular science fiction. Fantastic place to share ideas with or get advice from fellow SF costume geeks.
Stargate Command: The headquarters for Stargate costuming. Again, very active message boards full of knowledgeable folks who would be happy to help you make your Stargate fannish dreams come true. Excellent photo galleries for reference, as well.
The Padawan's Guide: The best resource I've found for Jedi costuming. Also has great references for other Star Wars costuming, especially from the prequels.
Star Trek Uniform Guide: An excellent photo resource for costuming from all the Trek series as well as the movies.
Kilts:
Utilikilts: Kilts with cargo pockets! The original American kilt. These people are leading the way to bring men's unbifurcated garments into the mainstream. Although I can make my own, I so believe in what they're doing that as soon as I can afford to, I'm buying a black Workman's. Men, you have no idea how comfortable a kilt is until you've worn one for a day. I mean it!
How To Make A Kilt: Simplified instructions on how to make a traditional style kilt. I modified some of these instructions in order to make my own Utilikilt knockoffs.
Kilt Making Web Site: Another page of simplified instructions for making a traditional-style kilt. I also used some of these instructions in the creation of my own personal kilts.
Bravehearts Against Trouser Tyranny: A site about bringing kilts and other men's unbifurcated garments into the mainstream. Once our society discards that silly notion that skirted garments are "unmanly" men all over our society will be able to breathe a huge sigh of relief at their newfound... uh... freedom.
Amerikilts: Another maker of American styled kilts. Little different approach. No cargo pockets but a matching utilitarian sporran. Also, a bit cheaper. (And what should a man wear under his kilt? Why, boots, of course!)
Filk:
Filk.com: A good general site for filk information. They are one of the many stations on Live365.com. The Filk.com online station gives you a wide assortment of filk 24/7.
Swarthmore filk books: Swarthmore College's famous list of the lyrics for dozens of classic filks. Scroll down the page to "Information" and click on the filk books and you're off and running.
Random Factors: A great source to purchase filk CDs and tapes.
Prometheus Music: Another excellent source for filk CDs. I highly recommend "To Touch The Stars"
Darn Near All The Filk On The Web: They're not kidding about that. Usul, we have filk the likes of which even Ghod has never seen!
Tom Smith Online: Master-filker Tom Smith's Web page and online store. Wicked imagination on this one.
Echo's Children: A female duet that delivers haunting, lilting harmonies. Their songs stay with you long after the last note has faded.
Texas Filk Home Page: Site run by my friend Joe. Filk information for Texas fen. You don't have to be Californian or Canadian to sing and enjoy great filk.
Miscellaneous Links:
Burning Man: Burning Man is an arts festival/survival exercise/intentional community/rave/party... and I don't know what-all. The event has so many facets to it, that it is extremely hard to pigeonhole. Check out the Web site and see for yourself. Be prepared to spend some time, however. There's a lot in there.
Burnaustin.org: The online headquarters for the Central Texas Burning Man community. It is the place to get info on local Austin burn events up to and including Flipside, the local Burn event.
Depression.com: Depression is an all too common yet highly misunderstood illness. We've all been depressed for various reasons. Some of us, though, stay depressed for extended periods of time and get more depressed than is common. This is the difference between "being depressed" and having "depression". In extreme cases clinical depression is a life-threatening illness as potentially lethal as the most aggressive cancer. If you're not a chronic depressive, chances are you know someone who is. Do at least a little reading about the condition. It could save a life. Perhaps even your own.
Children and Adults With ADD: Attention Deficit Disorder is widely misunderstood, overdiagnosed in some cases, and underdiagnosed in others. And yes, some people don't grow out of it when they become adults. It just manifests differently. (see all the different things listed under my "Costuming" page for example)
ADDitude Magazine: Another good magazine for and about ADD. Hey! Let's see what's on TV!
The Onion: All the news that's fit to have you rolling on the floor laughing your arse off.
Southern Poverty Law Center: Because somebody's got to keep an eye on the forces of bigotry and intolerance and try to eradicate them. I thoroughly hate bigots and their twisted philosopies. Someday I'd like to build these big camps...
The Ford Mustang: My favorite automobile ever. Should you wish a special place of honor in my coming Regime, all you have to do is give me a (real) 1968 notchback with a 302 V8 with 3 angle valve-job, 4 barrel carb, dual pipes, 5 speed manual transmission, heavy-duty clutch, traction bars, power steering, lightly tinted windows, racing gas tank (no explosions), fog lamps, and electronic ignition module, preferably in black. See? I don't ask for much, really.
The Tusgegee Airmen: And speaking of Mustangs, the P-15 Mustang (my favorite piston-engined fighter) was the combat mount of the Tusgegee Airmen. These were the Black fighter jocks of WWII who never lost a single bomber under their protection to enemy fighters. Ever! Even over Berlin itself, the Luftwaffe could not penetrate their fierce yet coldly disciplined defense. The coolest of the cool.
The Buffalo Soldiers: The Black troopers who made up the 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry on the Western Frontier. Though they were an oppressed people used against another oppressed people, they managed to earn the respect of their Native American enemies. The term "Buffalo Soldier" is a name of honor granted by the Plains Indians who faced these fearless and implacable sons of Africa on the North American prairies. The baddest of the bad.
